Understanding Chess is remarkably similar to Chernev's earlier, and notably famous, Logical Chess: grandmaster games are featured in both books, and the formatting of each game with analysis and diagrams after each move is remarkable similar. Open the two side by side and they practically look like the same book.But Nunn's book is significantly better for a few simple reasons. First, Chernev features just one game from the 1950s and two from the 1940s - the rest date from the late 19th to early 20th century. Consequently, a lot of the games are simply outdated, and rarely seen in today's play. This is a simplistic criticism, but true, nonetheless. Almost all of Nunn's games date from the 1990s. Second, and more importantly, Nunn's analysis is simply better. Nunn explains the reasons behind each move with more depth than Chernev does. But Nunn is careful to do so in a way that is still understandable to the beginner. I have little experience with chess and I understand practically all of Nunn's analysis. True, Nunn sometimes includes variations that are difficult to consider without a board in hand, but these variations are far less essential than the actual move analysis.I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in chess.
Great book! I just got the book and it's been great so far! Very detailed in why the moves were played. I'd suggest you use 2 boards while studying through this book. (One can be a computer) This way you can do the variation moves. I'm practicing my over the board play so I have 2 tournament boards set up. You don't necessarily have to use two boards, but I believe it will be a benefit to you.I spent 1.99 on book and 3.99 on shipping. Completely worth every cent.
First things first - I'm not much of a chess player. But this book makes complex positions appear simple. Nunn has obviously spent a lot of time finding the games which make this book such a joy. Clear thematic examples, but nothing trivial or one-sided.Like with the Chernev classic, Nunn attempts to explain each move (though blessedly her refers to previous games which share the same opening moves). I read the book on a Kindle and that had the advantage of hyperlinks to those referenced games.The analysis of the opening moves is perfect - why can't Opening Books be written like this. Nunn clearly explains why, later in the game, a particular choice is important.Weaker players like me can choose to ignore some of the analysis. There can be lengthy variations which explain (usually) how a better move could have been made. I did follow along with some of them but having a board (or digital equivalent) is necessary for that. But I found the main text could be understood pretty well without playing along with it. The board's position was shown enough for me to follow in my head.Highly recommended for someone learning the game; better players would probably get even more out of it!
An excellent book for studying and improving one's understanding and play. Not a book for early beginners. Tyros ought to start with one of Chernev's heavily commented games collections, then try one or more from Giddins or McDonald, before Nunn's book.Most of the 30 deeply annotated GM games are from the 1990's. The games are organized into lessons on Opening Themes; Middle Game Themes; and, Endgame Themes. Recommended for intermediate players willing to put in work to get better.A bargain from AWF_Books. In the style of Irving Chernev's "Logical Chess: Move By Move," comes the variation intensive version by John Nunn. It was one of the books I read that helped me move up from Class D to Class C and I'd recommend it for Elo 1400 and up. For me, it was all in how I studied it -- every move, every variation, all while covering up each move and trying to figure out the right move. Though it's not quite the computer dump of Garry Kasparov's "My Great Predecessors" series, I got dizzy at times and thought I'd need four or five boards, but the book is as instructive as it gets. I spent 23 hours on Karpov-Ribli (12 the first day, 11 the next) alone. Broken up into Opening Themes, Middlegame Themes (including Attacking Play, Defensive Play and Positional Play) and Endgame Themes, these 30 games are great examples of why studying instructive games help improve a chess player's ability to calculate. Put some work into in and you should be as satisfied as I was. Highly recommended.
Good book although a little bit advanced. Some of the games presented are difficult to follow. Perhaps it will be necessary (at least for me) to read "Understanding Chess middlegames" by the same author.
Although Chernev's Logical Chess Move by Move is a classic and a "must read"this book takes you to then next level.Yes Nunn provides some deep variations...but the book is easily enjoyed just by readingthe "text" moves.The book is a collection of great (recent) games and a treatise on chess strategy.
Very good. Nunn knows how to explain difficult positions to everyone. I've learned a lot from his book.
