Oh my goodness, this book! I have a new Julie Berry favorite. I love everything about LOVELY WAR. The setting was so vivid, the characters so filled with emotion, the writing so gorgeous, and the story so layered and rich and divine. Both teen and adult readers will surely be captivated by the romances (more than one!), the thrilling, terrifying battle scenes, and the deeper meaning behind it all. Historical fiction at its finest right here. I can already tell this is going to be on my "favorite books of 2019" list.
Don't miss this unique book! The description does not do justice to this roller coaster ride. Hephaestus catches Aphrodite and Ares in his golden net. Aphrodite has been cheating on Hephaestus. He gives her a chance to defend herself in a trial. In her defense she tells the stories of James and Hazel (from Great Britain), Colette (from Belgium) and Aubrey (from Harlem): how they meet, fall in love during WWI. Each character is on his/her own emotional ride as they meet, are separated, deal with racial prejudice, and are kept apart. If you love historical fiction, you will be highly entertained by this book.Eternally grateful to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review an ARC.
The Lovely War by Julie Berry is a romantic tale of love & loss during WWI. Berry combines the love story of a WWI history with the ancient Greek gods as the framework of her tale. The story begins with Aphrodite telling a love story to her husband Hephaestus and Ares( god of war & her lover) about young love in war time, this is set during WWII. The dual love story is mainly about Hazel and James, two English people who meet and fall in love on the brink of war. The stories delve into why love is more powerful than war. James and Hazel meet as WWI begins and their relationship undergoes the drama of WWI and Berry’s ability to weave in historical details makes this novel a compelling love story/historical fiction. The frame story of the gods was intriguing but essentially only gives a reason to tell the love story to the reader from an omniscient narrator, Aphrodite. Later the author’s message of love overcoming hate is delivered through Aphrodite. I highly enjoyed how history is woven into a lovely romantic tale!Another fascinating aspect of LOVELY WAR is the way Berry also examines the prejudice that black soldiers experienced during WWI. As a children’s librarian I recommend it—Must read for WWI and YA readers!
This book was extraordinary. The plot wasn't difficult to follow but the way it was presented was unusual. It's about a black regiment in WWI, a ragtime band and the love between a black soldier and a white YMCA worker. The story takes you to the trenches of France and the gruesome conditions that our soldiers had to endure. It is also the story of a white regiment fighting that same war. It touches on prejudices but it is much more than that. It always amazes me to know how much our forefathers did to ensure freedom in our country and in other countries as well.
In The Lovely War, Berry uses the backdrop of war and Greek mythology to tell a powerfully beautiful story of friendship, love, and loss. The writing is masterful and the reader is drawn in from the first page! During the height of WWI we meet Aubrey Edwards, an African-American ragtime musician playing under the legendary Lt. James Reese Europe, who enlists in the army to play in Europe's band and ends up as one of the infamous Harlem Hellfighters. We also meet Colette Fournier, a Belgian refugee whose family was slaughtered during the German "Rape of Belgium," James Aldridge, a brand new British soldier who plans to become an architect, and Hazel Windicott, a shy young pianist playing for churches and socials in London. As these four young people meet each other and the war pushes them together and apart, we experience the trauma and heartache of love and war.Meanwhile, add in the fact that the stories of these star-crossed lovers is being narrated by none other than the goddess of love herself, Aphrodite, in a makeshift courtroom, as an attempt to justify her infidelity to a jealous husband. Besides herself, Aphrodite calls Ares, Apollo, and even Hades as witnesses to explain the inextricable connection between love and war and the necessity of the hope that love can bring in even the darkest of times.I loved the strong female characters, I loved that all four protagonists were honorable, yet human. I loved that the intense hell of war was described briefly enough to have an idea, but wasn't the central focus of the story. I'm not normally a fan of romance books, but this one crosses that genre with adventure, excitement, some social justice, and a whole lot of history thrown in and it mixes beautifully! I laughed and cried while reading this book then I stayed up late to finish it. That's the best kind of book there is! Highly recommended!Disclaimer: I received a free ebook from Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
