I was moved by this book. The author has a way of weaving the personal narratives of those she studied into every part of this ethnography. This not only makes for a fascinating read, but it also gave me a much closer understanding of what it might actually mean to be HIV positive in Bolivia. Heckert's book is an incredible example of how we as humans can better understand the complexities of the world around us. Her clarity of writing, multiple layers of analyses that are always grounded in the words and data of those she studied, and impeccable research makes this the perfect book for intro and graduate classes in addition to people simply interested in learning more about the topic. I am grateful to people willing to do this type of in-depth research because without it, we know much less about our world.
