I'm not sure why so many people wrote rave reviews, and I certainly wouldn't pay $27 for it! It's nothing more than a blank workbook with a few prompts and pictures. There is no survival/wilderness information at all. There are suggestions for doing your own research, which is fine, but I could easily gather everything that this book has to offer in a $0.50 notebook.
The Thinking Tree has come out with another winner! What a great book to learn and record your outdoor survival skills including flora and fauna...what's edible, what's poisonous, etc.; how to build fires, tie knots, and make shelter; first aid and orienteering; and how to find and purify water. The book also has some scenarios to practice your survival skills. My son and I are going to take my 10 and 14-year old grandsons and these journals to the woods on a friend's property and have "Survival School!" These are skills everyone should know, especially those who travel, camp, hike, or otherwise are around wilderness areas! Do some research using books, videos, or websites and fill out the journal pages then take them out and practice what you've learned. They have even included survival scenarios!
These journals will be an amazing way to capture what we learn about harmful plants and animals, edible plants, how to purify water, build a shelter, and so much more! My kids are super excited to work on this one and learn these useful skills!
I recently purchased this journal, and began using it together with my teenage son. He is very much into video games, and we are using this journal with one of his games that involves survival after a disaster. We've been taking notes related to the game, discovering and discussing survival needs. And how we could prepare ourselves for needed survival during a power outage, or being snowed in and unable to get to town. A very fun and useful journal that can be used in many ways!
This book is so cool my little guy is 8 his daddy is helping him with this book recently they researched poisonous plants together at the library with this book. Older boys would definetly love doing this on their own. You have everything in here from wild life to plants, survival skills like fire and water and shelter. How to skills like knots,orienteering first side survival bag and different survival scenarios very cool book and I love that my husband and son can do this together my girls could certainly join in easily since thinking tree journals are for family use I can make copies for the children in my home!
I love this journal!!! I think this would be a wonderful gift for any child that loves to explore and get outdoors. Pair it up with a compass, flashlight and other fun outdoor items. We are going to use this journal as a family and let it be our guide to get outside and learn new things.
It's wonderful. I ordered one to preview it, and immediately ordered two more. Planning on using it next year as a supplementary curriculum for health and science. I wish all of their workbooks were this affordable, because it really is phenomenal!
