I buy these books by the pile and share with friends, family, and strangers. After all, that's how I came into possession of my first copy. This is not light reading for a sunny afternoon, but the subjects are broken down enough to where you can pick it up, pick a page and read for a while. This is a great choice for church book groups, Confirmation gifts, new parents, old parents, Lent reading, or anyone looking for another way to see things. This should be mandatory reading for Catholics, though Catholicism is not mandatory to benefit from this book. I recently gave a new copy to a man who was struggling with anger after the loss of his mother. He was "spiritual" on the best of days though didn't identify as Christian. I have not seen him since, but I heard later that he's rarely seen without his now well worn dog-eared & high lighted copy and his attitude and work ethic both have improved. Enjoy.
Many of the late mediaeval Christian mystical texts are quite otherworldly and/or erudite, as fits the issue of mysticism. They are often so internally focused and spiritual in nature that, though beautiful and useful in their own right, leave something to be desired for the modern believer searching for a more practical approach to fighting the spiritual warfare of everyday life. Scupoli's work is both spiritual and eminently practical. It is a handbook for the daily battle written by an old veteran. Scupoli's years of experience as a spiritual guide come through in the wisdom and perspective that pervades this book. I am a Protestant and there is more than enough guidance for me and other non-Catholics in the work due to the author's practical standpoint. It does not go into the issues of systematic theology that would be a barrier for many of the various Christian traditions. The only exceptions to this point would be the entire chapter dedicated to the importance of the mass, and in the little reminders spread throughout the book that it was written for monks under the authority of their religious superiors. These issues are easily put aside without doing any real violence to the basics of Scupoli's teachings and guidance. It would be good if every Christian were able to carry this book around in his/her pocket wherever they went (along with the Bible of course.)
We live in dark and dangerous times. People have kicked God out of their lives and the devil is filling the void. This book is an excellent guide to fighting the demons that affect our lives in a negative way.
St Francis de Sales carried this book with him wherever he went and for the rest of his life. It is a nuts and bolts manual of how to fight the spiritual battle for our souls on a daily basis. Those who aren't fighting have already lost the battle. This book FILLS A HUGE GAP in most Catholics religious formation by showing us exactly how to achieve sanctity and grow in virtue. Our reason is acted upon by God from above and our appetites from below. This is the essence of spiritual combat. The author outlines the steps and aids (confession , communion, among others) to help us be victorious in our daily quest for sanctity. I also recommend St Ignatius works on spiritual discernment, the examine prayer and making decisions spiritually. Father Gallagher's books and talks on them are excellent and practical.
The most outstanding qualities of this book are its timeless appeal and its treatment of morality and prayer. It is difficult to find current literature that treats the spiritual journey with such genuine concern for the soul no matter how challenging the message is at times. I have occasionally seen excerpts from this book used by other writers and decided that I wanted to "go to the source." I recommend this book to anyone who is willing to encounter a serious discussion in their quest to become a more spiritual person.
This is a good book on the practical issues surrounding sanctification. Although it is from a pre-Reformation Catholic perspective any Pietist (i.e. Baptist, Methodist, etc.) would find it an enjoyable and practical read. It provides practical ways to battle against personal sin and draw closer to Jesus Christ, the one, true God.
I really wanted to give this a rating of 3 at first bc I found at times this was difficult to understand. But it was also very mind boggling also and thought provoking. It’s one of those books where I would definitely reread again soon to get more out of it.
