This book is stunning in its in depth research, balanced insights, and deeply humane storytelling of the disposition of the remains of those killed at the WTC on 9/11. Footnote after footnote supports a depth of resources I have not seen in a book such as this. The multiple and complex perspectives of the many, many communities (the deceased; the families of the deceased; the City of New York Office of the Chief Medical Examiner; FDNY; NYPD; stakeholder groups formed to advocate; judicial; the nation in general; so many more) are shared with underlying details and a balanced approach. Personal stories permeate this work. As I read this book, I stopped to reread paragraphs and sets of paragraphs; this is how compelling it is. I highly, highly recommend this book.
This book is a valuable contribution to scholarship on 9/11 and a story that compels you to keep reading. The author eloquently provides viewpoints of the numerous stakeholders involved in the memorial planning process ranging from the families of the victims to the LMDC to political representatives. Throughout, the author maintains a respectable sense of neutrality despite the emotionally-charged material that lets the reader come to one's own conclusions. I agree with the first reviewer that the personal stories helped me understand the emotions that families were going through as constituents went back and forth over how to honor the lives lost on that day.The book also provides a useful analysis of identification techniques utilized in the months and years following 9/11. The explanations of the science are appropriate for those with and without scientific background. I highly recommend this book for those who want to learn more about the events following 9/11 and the years of negotiations and planning that went into the memorial in New York today.
Well researched and balanced, the author takes no position but offers thoughtful questions relevant to an enduring value of the Constitution - that the consent of the governed is an essential way of American life.
