My team and I are on our tenth sprint, and we were definitely struggling to find the "right way" to do agile planning and estimation. As they say, Scrum is deceptively simple to explain and deceptively difficult to "get right" when you're actually doing it. As with any process, it needs to be tailored to your project. The various concise (terse?) Scrum guides that I've read only covered estimation and planning at a high level and we were having trouble getting the value out of our planning meetings.This book focuses on a particularly challenging aspect of agile software development using Scrum, and does a very good job of covering the subject. It has led me to a much richer understanding of how to actually do estimation and planning for a Scrum team. There were several moments of clarity that I got from reading this book. Only time will tell if this wisdom will translate into more productive planning for our team.If your team is struggling to effectively implement agile estimation and planning, then I strongly recommend you take a look at this book.
Good treatise on how to go about estimating and planning in an agile way.
This Robert C. Martin Series text by Mike Cohn has been unfairly criticized by previous reviewers. The content in general is very well written, and the subject matter flows very well from topic to topic. In my opinion, there is some missing detail that could have served well those readers new to the topic of estimation. In light of this observation, I think that "Software Estimation - Demystifying the Black Art" (see my review for that work) can be seen as a companion text to "Agile Estimating and Planning". Mike Cohn simply focuses on agile projects, so if such projects are the primary focus of the reader, they might otherwise get caught up with detail that is not necessarily within their domain. From my experience, however, it will serve the agile practitioner well if they understand some of the theory behind the practice of general software project estimation. Of course, Mike Cohn also provides a considerable portion of the book to agile planning in general, and this topic is what makes the book unique in 2007. While other books of this genre can be expected in the near future, the seven parts of the discussion cover the subject matter well: "The Problem and the Goal", "Estimating Size", "Planning for Value", "Scheduling", "Tracking and Communicating", "Why Agile Planning Works", and "A Case Study". Each of these parts build upon its predecessors, finally culminating in a case study. I found especially valuable the discussions on agile planning in general, the different methods of agile estimating, how to prioritize deliverables, project schedule iterations, velocity, and tracking. Throughout the text, the author provides dozens of examples with just the right amount of tables and diagrams to aid the discussion. This book is a relatively easy read for a wide audience, and the quotes shared at the beginning of each of the chapters provide a humorous (although usually unintentional), realistic look at the philosophy of estimating and planning by individuals not in the software industry. My favorite quotes of the lot: "Planning is everything. Plans are nothing."; "A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week."; "In a good shoe, I wear a size six, but a seven feels so good, I buy a size eight."; "Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future."; "There's no sense in being precise when you don't even know what you're talking about."; "It is better to be roughly right than precisely wrong."; "To be uncertain is to be uncomfortable, but to be certain is to be ridiculous.".
Aside from being one of the most highly respected and sought after Agile consultants, Mike Cohn is a prolific writer with a focus on delivering practical information based on years of real-world experience bringing agile into organizations. This book continues in that vein, delivering both high level theory surrounding empirical estimating and planning techniques as well as practical "how-to" implementation details. This book drips of real-world experience; while other books seem largely theoretical, Cohn's experience implementing these techniques comes through very clearly.If you're implementing agile, I highly recommend this book and the techniques outlined for bringing an empirical approach to estimating and planning. There is a misconception that agile is weak on planning; that's not true, there just hasn't been a practical guide before this book. Buy it, read it, carry it with you where ever you go.

Repeated many times, it would result in the project plans that would be held over our teams' heads for the months. Uneasiness about the plan started immediately, and only increased as reality unfolded. This became my main motivation for becoming a project manager- "there must be a better way", I would think. This is certainly one."Planning is everything. Plans are nothing." These words of Field Marshal Helmuth Graf von Moltke introduce the first chapter, and their importance and relevance to software projects is clear throughout. This book is a well-organized, smooth-flowing read that simplified for me the mysteries of project and release planning. As the title declares, the book was written for agile projects, but I believe that the lessons inside can serve various purposes- to provide a pragmatic, repeatable framework for planning in changing project environments, as well as to debunk misconceptions that agile projects are short on planning (in fact the opposite is true). I've used the techniques recommended herein on several projects- and will do so on every one in the future- they've helped everyone I've worked with understand planning and do a better job at product development in general.George J.
