From Booklist
This striking pop-up book published under the imprimatur of paper engineers Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart, introduces a medieval European castle and the activities within it. Open the first double-page spread and up pops a three-dimensional castle, including its walls, courtyard, and drawbridge, with two smaller gatefold pages revealing other pop-up scenes. From the alchemist in the tower to the prisoners in the torture chamber, the vision of medieval times seems romanticized and the text secondary to the pleasing artwork and paper engineering. Still, Olmon provides plenty of interesting facts about the castle, its inhabitants, and their activities, and what other book includes a working, pop-up catapult that can shoot a spitball three feet? Though primarily a bookstore item, this volume can also serve as an enticing addition to curriculum units and library displays on the Middle Ages. Pair it with Jan Adkins' What If You Met a Knight (2006) for a more realistic view of the period. Carolyn PhelanCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Grade 2-5–Chatty text and cleanly designed pop-up illustrations provide a hasty overview of life during the Middle Ages. Spreads briefly cover the construction and exterior footprint of a fortress; rooms (from the chapel above to the dungeon below); jobs performed by craftsmen and inhabitants; knighthood, armor, and weapons; a tournament; and a feast. Information is presented in a smoothly flowing narrative that tends toward the enthusiastic (Without an impressive and impregnable castle, you'd be in danger of losing your crown, your title, your lands…even your head!). There is no glossary, but terms such as parapets, oubliette, and trebuchet are defined in context. Featuring scenes such as a multifloored castle interior, a shiny suit of armor, and a joust (with a pull-tab that moves horses toward one another), the pop-ups are colorful and sturdily constructed. Eye-catching details abound in the cartoon-style illustrations; two men nap after a meal on the fortress roof, an extremely unhappy gong farmer cleans the garderobe pit, and a serving woman receives an unwanted pinch during a feast. Libraries having the dough for solteties (sugar-sculpted desserts served by the wealthy) should consider purchasing this fun-to-browse book, while those starved for funds should stick with meatier fare.–Joy Fleishhacker,School Library Journal Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Good book. Love that the story and characters come alive and poop out when you turn the pages. My son took it to school and all the children wanted to read the book because it is so much fun, engages the children's imagination
I remember, when I was a kid, having pop-up books that basically required you to pull flimsy levers to induce some kind of lame motion in a car, tiger, or whatever. The whole concept of a pop-up book was a gimmick and the pop-ups rarely added anything to the story or subject. What you have in 'Castle: Medieval Days and Knights' is 180 degrees removed from this. The pop ups literally bring to life the fantastically written text. Even without the pop-ups, the book would be interesting and captivating for kids 4-8 but, with the exquisitely engineered scenes that spring to life each time a page is opened, the child is immediately drawn in to the scene. It is quite, quite excellent and well worth the asking price.
Grandparents, parents, home-educators, and children: You will absolutely LOVE this book! I've been compiling books to categorize by era (ancient history, medieval history, etc.) in order to transition into a history-based curriculum for the next four years. Although I initially thought that this book would be too "young" for my children (who are already into G.A. Henty books), I couldn't pass it up because of the PRICE and because it was presented/endorsed by Sabuda. I am SO glad we got it! The art is amusing, the details are overwhelming, and the engineering is delightful! Also, the fact-filled narrative is informative yet pretty funny. The book serves its purpose well: it educates, leaves them eager to learn more, and in the case of big kids (mine are 9 and 11) gives them a break from the "heavy" reading and keeps things fun. Enjoy!
This pop-up book is an adventure of incredible (sorry for the use of an overused word) constructions in paper that spring up from each page. I marvel at the engineering genius of Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart. There is lots of accompanying text on the life in Medieval times, especially within the castle. I learned what an atilliator is and does. In addition to the pop-ups, there are some interactive motion illustrations of occupations. I love collecting these books, and what a treat to read together with a child!
My (recently) 6-year-old sucked in his breath when he opened the first page. He's always on the move and a talker so it was gratifying to have him sit and be quiet and this book did it. There aren't many pages but what there is, is filled with enough material to excite any imagination and then they begin talking again (asking questions). The pop-ups are elaborate and well done, full of color and rich with history, including a knighting, how to make various items, a joust, and a razzle-dazzle castle.
Amazing book. But the littles will tear it.
I bought an extremely used copy at a very fair price. Even not in mint condition, this is a wonderful pop up book, perfect notonly for children who love knights and castles but for adults as well. It's so cleverly designed so much fun to manipulate.
Children would love any of the pop-up books by Sabuda and Reinhart and this one is exceptional. A child truly has an image of a castle and its workings. A work of art for sure. I also love Sabuda's Christmas cards with a religious theme. Worth the price for sure.
