What an amazing story of an amazing man! I ordered the original paperback of the adult version, but then one of my boys wanted to read the kids version, so I got this one on Kindle. I began reading it myself, and finished it in one night! (This would be written for approximately 5th - 9th graders, in my opinion.) The book is written on the level for kids, but also gives all relevant information in order to inspire them to do great things someday.Dr. Carson had absolutely nothing handed to him. Everything he got was worked for--HARD. He got past racial bigotry without a complaint. He rose above poverty and struggling in school. He proved that if you really want something, you CAN get it, here in America. His mother was also a wonderful example to her sons and taught them right.This book is also a testimony of what God can do through a person who gives themselves to Him. Not only is he a man of character, but he is also a man of faith.I highly recommend this book as one that should be read by EVERY child in America, and I cannot wait to get my own version of the book!
I ordered this book last night and didn't sleep until I had finished it. This man, Ben Carson, is wholly dedicated to doing whatever he is led to, with guidance and dependence on God. That's how he was raised out of poverty, being raised by a single mother. That's how he worked to become THE BEST surgeon, separating conjoined twins in many countries around the world. His experience assembling huge teams for such surgeries proves his ability to lead, and to think outside the box. Heck, to him there is NO BOX!I wanted to know what all the buzz was about him winning two straw polls and coming in second in a third. I believe his credibility is substantiated by his story, as evidenced to me through this very captivating and enthrallling book. If he doesn't have expertise., he's humble enough to find that knowledge and to follow it.
One reviewer said he/she wouldn't send it to the grandchildren because of the discussion of racism this man faced as a child. That's too bad. I sent this book to five grandchildren so far. I'm not proud of America's racist past nor that in the present. However, if we don't face it, we will never overcome it. But this book has so many positive ideas to give to our children: overcoming obstacles through hard work, rising above unfairness and injustice, overcoming personal shortcomings, choosing gentleness instead of violence, success through hard work and tenacity, and making do with the resources available while working to increase these. What a great example this man is for our children (and us.)
I am reading this to my boys, ages 9 and 11. Amazing how into it they are! They love it! Each night I read about 2 short chapters to them and we're having great conversations about what it takes to get ahead in life, about racism, and about faith. All of his stories are simple and easy to imagine. He doesn't make any bizarre claims like CNN is accusing him of these days. I did many of the things he talks about when I was a kid!Another thing I like is how he describes learning and improving neurosurgery. I've had a microvascular decompression of the trigeminal nerve so I've done some study on brain surgery techniques (like using imaging to locate foramen's oval). Dr. Carson is the real deal. He's a good man who rejected a victim's mentality and embraced an active approach to improving his life and achieving the American Dream!
My kids LOVED this book! Well written and easy to understand for children. I read the version for adults and it was so great because my kids and I were able to have in depth discussions about this book. An amazing story, with a positive message of how with hard work and perseverance, one CAN overcome just about any obstacle to fulfill their dreams! I honestly think everyone in America needs to read this book!
Got this book for my 11 y/o son and 10 y/o nephew for their quarterly book report. Both boys loved the book and couldn't stop talking about it. They had both wached the movie and said this book "was waaaay better than the movie." It's funny to hear two little kids quote a medical book again and again. They both found the book to be funny, inspirational, easy to read and informational. It's hard to find books that meet all these levels so I was thrilled and would definately buy this again as gifts for other young readers.
My son and I have been reading this book together. He is 11, and even though when I first told him he would have to read it there was the usual wailing and gnashing of teeth he has really liked it and has gone ahead of me and reads on his own. It's good for adults too who want the abbreviated version of his life story without reading the adult version.
This is the best book I have read in a very long time. It is very easy to read and understand......until they get into all the medical terms, which isn't very much. More people need to read this book to understand what his life is all about, his failures as a child and many successes as an adult. It is a "Can't put down" book!!!
I read this book with my 9 year old son. It was fascinating, exciting and so inspirational. It changed my sons opinion about reading and inspired him to become a better student. It encouraged us and reaffirmed our faith in God and his purpose for each of us! We loved it!
